My writer friend, Martin King, is writing 100 guest blog posts on tales from his childhood. Today is my turn and you will find Martin's story below. It's all about sweets and I certainly remember clutching my pennies as I stared at jars of sherbert trying to decide which one to have. I am old enough to remember the two and half pence piece. It was silver and similar to a 5p piece. I remember one delightful day when I thought I had a 2 and half coin but when I got to the sweet shop I realised it was actually 5p! I was rich!
I know all the sweets that Martin has mentioned. My very favourite sweets are Refreshers. I still buy them now. A few weeks ago Scholastic sent me a lunchbox full of sweets to celebrate the launch of 'You Can't Scare A Princess!' This book is out on 1st Sepember, although I have already seen copies in W H Smiths. It's a lovely feeling seeing your book actually out in shops.
Here is Martin's mini story:
When we were kids sweets were ace. And the choices were infinitesimal!
You could go into a sweet shop to be confronted with a thousand glass jars all lined up in rows with myriads of colours of differing culinary sweet delights. There was something magical stepping into a proper sweetshop which was enhanced by the wonderful aroma. And not only that, but with your tiny almost valueless coins, you could purchase a ¼ ounce. If you were lucky some shop keepers would even allow you to have two lots of sweets mixed together for that as well.
Kaylie was very popular and you had so many flavours to choose from. If you are wondering what kaylie was, it was what we called sherbet. But there was so many fantastic sweets to choose from and I am going to take you down memory lane of some of my favourites. Some you can still get today and some are long gone.
Sherbet dips, sherbet fountains, sherbet flying-saucers, liquorice, spanish, black liquorice strings filled with sherbet.
Fizz bombs, cola cubes, peardrops, lemon drops, jaw breakers, fireballs, aniseed balls, mint imperials.
Caramac, milky bars are on me, finger of fudge is just enough to give you kids a try, wagon wheels, rolos – do you love anyone enough to give them your last rolo? Treats, curly-wurlys.
Texan bars, highland toffee, wham bars, arrow bars (thats really going back), black jacks, mojos, fruit salads, toffos they came in mint or fruit flavours, pacers.
Then there was bazooka bubberly, eating paper, cola bottles, love hearts, tootie fruities, jelly tots and pick n mix from Woolies.
I could go on and on... but the question is – what do you remember?
